Advanced Contemporary Portraiture with Lora Murphy / by Bethany Handfield

Portraiture with wax - stretching your mind and skill sets to the limit.

Lora Murphy was born in Ireland and educated in Ireland, USA, and Italy . Trained as an oil painter, she now works primarily in encaustic and mixed media . Lora teaches workshops in Contemporay Portraiture in Encaustic throughout the world and also through her e-course. She divides her time between Ireland and Denmark and maintain studios in both countries.

I approached advanced portraiture with much apprehension as I tend to paint loose with an emphasis on the abstract. Lora was an amazing instructor and guided the class with ease. We were first to grid our paintings, but I have to admit that I cheated and used carbon copy to trace mine.

We painted our subjects using the Lora Murphy set from Enkaustikos. Her set contains a percentage of microcrystalline so the paints were thinned out with added flexibility. We painted on board, paper, and gessoed canvas. We were also treated to a range of mixed media products such as Ceracolours and Gamblin's Cold Wax.

I highly recommend Lora to anyone wanting to learn portraiture. If you can take a class with her in person - do it! Her generosity of spirit is incredible and she lights up the room.
